Joseph Thanhauser III
Chairman, CRE, FRICS, SIOR
Joseph Thanhauser began his career in the 1970’s working for large New York developers and owners: first Uris Buildings Corporation (which became Olympia & York), and then Tishman Realty. He was involved in the leasing and development of their major commercial properties. In 1975 he joined a small group of former Uris employees in forming a development, consulting and brokerage company. The firm built and sold several office buildings and a hotel for its own account, but was most comfortable when placing its skills and experience, gained from being a landlord, at the disposal of tenants.

And, it was fundamentally different from every other firm that advised tenants: the firm did not think like an intermediary - trained in the tradition of the broker - but as an advocate for the tenant, knowing the rationales and tactics that each landlord would employ. In 1992 Thanhauser consolidated his position into the firm now known as Byrnam Wood.

He is known for negotiating aggressively and intelligently, and for an articulate style of analysis and reporting to clients - traits that have enabled him to win an unprecedented seven annual REBNY awards recognizing the City’s most ingenious and professional deals. Mr. Thanhauser is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a member of the Counselors of Real Estate and a member of the Society of Office and Industrial Realtors.
